Member Highlight: Grant Goertzen

When Grant isn’t climbing, he can be found cliff jumping, skiing, fishing and thinking about climbing.

He started out climbing at Firstenburg Community Center in Nike tennis shoes with a tree climbing harness and no chalk about five days a week for a year. This eventually led him to a job there, where he still works.

He first discovered climbing while at a friends birthday party in 2015, then didn't come back until February of 2019. “This when I started to actually get not bad and attempted to use technique (ew).”

We asked Grant about his favorite climbing memory: “Before coronavirus I had flashed the v7 on 3 consecutive sets. Hanz and Joe were watching because they had just finished fore running. After seeing me get it, they immediately made the problem harder....all three times .oof.”

“To me, climbing is proof that hard work pays off. If ya don’t climb, you stay bad at it. If you put in the time and hard work, you're less bad.”

Grant’s advice for new climbers is this: “Ask questions. Lots of questions. I was scared to ask questions because everyone was so much better than me. I didn't even know what "beta" meant for at least a year and a half. You'll improve faster if you ask questions and people don't mind answering your questions. Also slab sucks.”

“The team kids will always be better than us. Charlotte saying ‘c'mon’ actually really helps the send, so get a Charlotte.”

There you have it folks, get a Charlotte and your sends will improve!
